The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for south central South Dakota Monday evening, warning of tornado-like wind speeds. At 7:43 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Ideal South Housing, near Winner, moving east at 45 mph.

Leaders representing different organizations within the community of Gregory met with Paula Jensen, community coach and Sr. vice president with Dakota Resources to discuss a blueprint for a thriving Gregory. Using a pyramid of building blocks, participants identified activities in the community that are already happening to create a visual map of where more collaboration is needed, to dream about projects for the future, and to determine where more attention is needed in order to build a thriving community.

Gregory Sons of the American Legion Squadron #6 received Squadron of the Year for the state of South Dakota. There are currently 47 squadrons in the state. The qualifications to achieve this award go off veteran help, community involvement, squadron goals and the commander’s challenge. Squadron #6 appreciates all veterans and all our communities in Gregory American Legion Post #6 for your support of bringing in the squadron. Congratulations to all members of Squadron #6.

In a dedication ceremony at the Upper Cut Meat Community near the Bennett County line and again in the afternoon in the Ft. Randall Dam area on Friday morning, July 12, the portion of South Dakota State Highway 18 from Pickstown to the Bennett County border was dedicated as the Sicangu Lakota Code Talker Highway in honor of the Lakota Code Talkers who served the United States military in WWII.

During the public input portion of the regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners, held at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2024, Mark Williams, Roland Dummer, Todd Dummer, Eric Bruinsma, and Deb Herrmann showed up to discuss the condition of a road in their part of the county, referred to as Williams Bottom. They cited concerns with the road, particularly since heavy rains earlier this summer, listing gravel that has washed out, leaving behind exposed rebar and large boulders, lack of proper maintenance causing water to remain in the road rather than running off the sides, and the road having narrowed to one lane. They also mentioned that students have a much longer bus ride since the bus is unable to pass through this area and has to go around a different way.

Ryler Stevicks is a high school junior determined to make a positive difference in this town, and one of the ways he intends to do that is by taking on the role of intern for the Gregory/Dallas Chamber of Commerce for his two remaining years of school.

Calli DeMers, the new director for the Gregory Economic Development (GED) Group, is no stranger to the economics of a small town, having grown up in rural Montana, she has seen the waves of change as small businesses try to compete with national chain stores and online shopping.
