Firefighters still busy fighting wildfires

Firefighters are gaining the upper hand on the wildfires in Nebraska and South Dakota. The Morrill Fire in western Nebraska was 98% contained as of March 22.

Harter announces campaign for District 21 State House

John Harter, a lifelong South Dakotan, rancher, and farmer from the Winner/Colome area in Tripp County, announced his candidacy for the South Dakota House of Representatives in District 21. A Republican, Harter aims to deliver principled conservative leadership and a farmer’s voice to Pierre.

Mass of Christian Burial to be held for Halva Mass of Christian Burial for Gary Halva, age 79, of Gregory, SD, will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at St Joseph Catholic Church, Gregory, SD. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

South Dakota State announces summer, fall 2025 graduates

The following students graduated after the summer and fall 2025 semesters at South Dakota State University. More than 1,000 students completed all requirements for a degree and/or certificate program.

High schoolers hitting the right notes: instrumental small group contest was held

On Wednesday, February 18, 2026, members of the high school band took part in instrumental small group contest in Chamberlain. Gregory had 14 entries in the contest. Eleven of those entries scored high enough to earn a superior and get a medal. Groups need 31-35, solos need 26-30, percussion groups/solos need 21-25 all to earn a superior. Those earning a superior were: Piper Bartlett - flute solo (30), Madi Graber - timpani solo (25), Madi Graber - marimba solo (25), Madi Graber - piano solo (28), Charissa Ring - alto sax solo (26), Piper Bartlett and Heydan Westfall -flute duet (35), Flute Quartet (31), Percussion Group (23), Clarinet Choir (32), and Brass Quintet (33).

Gregory Co. 4-H Shine at Annual Special Foods Contest

Gregory County 4-H hosted the annual Youth in Action Day Special Foods contest on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Burke Civic center with fourteen youth participating. In a special foods contest, youth prepare either a snack or meal within a 90-minute time period and also must complete a nutrition interview and a proper place setting. Their dish must also fulfill a daily nutrient requirement from one of the five food groups: dairy, fruit, vegetable, protein or grain. This year, our 4-H’ers went above and beyond with some complex meals.

Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act

Introduced by Senator Schumer, the goal of the Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act is to break up large meatpacking companies. The legislation would require packers who process more than one species to split, only allowing for production of one species.
