Independence Day travel could reach record levels

As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day during the nation’s 250th anniversary year, South Dakotans will join millions of travelers on the road despite rising costs for gasoline, hotels and airfare.

Funeral Service to be held for Trena Vandenbark Funeral services for Trena Mae Vandenbark, age 90, of Winner, SD, will be held on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home, Gregory, SD. A viewing to begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nebraska’s South Fork Fire all but extinguished

The South Fork Fire near Crawford, Nebraska was 92% contained as of Monday afternoon, having burned 39,696 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Crews continue to monitor areas of heavy fuels most at risk of retaining heat on the northwest edge of the burn area, but the focus has largely shifted to suppression repair.

SD Missouri River Tourism fishing report

Lake Francis Case: In Chamberlain, Allen’s Missouri River Guide Service shared no big changes for the area. However, bait fish are filling the system right now, so the catch is somewhat tougher, but this is normal for the time of year. Guides and crews fishing on their own catch a mixed bag. Staples work well; bottom bouncers, spinner, minnow, crawler, or pulling cranks. Depths have varied with walleye chasing a plethora of bait.

Glubbey’s Great Pear Adventure

Andrew Glubbey had traveled through nine states as of Monday, June 22, 2026. The pear car has been traveling through the states at 40 miles per hour with an end destination of Seattle, Washington, according to Andrew Glubbey’s social media. Andrew’s summer of fun began in Florida, where he built a wood structure around his scooter, covered it in cut-up cans, and painted it green to replicate a pear. He is getting over 60 miles to the gallon, making his travels very inexpensive.
