In 2023, the world experienced a record 63 billion+ dollar weather disasters, the US had 28 of them costing a total of $93 billion. As of August 8, in the US there have been 19, before hurricane Debbie. Now FEMA is nearly out of money to help recover from future weather disasters. Forget climate change, these are unpredictable worldwide and extreme weather events occurring with increasing frequency.

Ed Dostal was in attendance at the regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners, held at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2024, to comment on the second and final reading of the county’s wind energy systems ordinance. In addition, Tom Madsen, who has been working with Dostal to establish a wind farm on his land, was on the phone to discuss the ordinance.

Grain elevators closing leave farmers with fewer choices

Earlier this year, Hansen-Mueller shut down and sold the grain elevator in Gregory, followed a few months later by the announcement that CHS is shutting down the elevator in Dallas. These closures leave the area with only the CHS elevators in Fairfax and Winner in operation.

When the Study Committee on Property Tax Assessment Methodology holds its third meeting of the 2024 Interim on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, members will have their ears open, ready to listen. Co-chairs Senator Randy Deibert (R-Spearfish) and Representative Drew Peterson (R-Salem) are encouraging the public to attend and provide their comments, concerns, and questions on property tax assessments in South Dakota.
