Shor t ly after 1900, two railroad towns – Evarts and Le Beau – appeared on the east side of the Missouri River just east of the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. Evarts was the first to become well-known. It was founded when the Milwaukee Railroad continued its Aberdeen line westward in anticipation of an extension across the Indian lands.

Friday was Groundhog Day, the mid-point of the winter season. Tradition claims that if the groundhog sees its shadow upon emerging from its burrow that day, we will have six more weeks of winter. If it doesn’t, we will have an early spring.

Frank Kenzy was training horses with his father before he was ten years old. Growing up on the family ranch near Iona, South Dakota, riding was just a part of their way of life. Frank’s father, Harry, raised quarter horses. Frank’s boyhood years were full of starting colts and hauling mares to be bred.

The Gregory Economic Development Group will host the annual career and job opportunity fair on February 13, 2024, at the Gregory Memorial Auditorium. The career fair will begin at 10 a.m. Students from Burke and Colome will have a time slot of 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Gregory students will be there from 1:00 2:30 p.m., and it will be open to the public from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Students made an audition recording that was selected from hundreds of auditions. They are some of the best fourth-sixth grade singers from across the state. This is also the most students from Gregory that have made it into Elementary Honor Choir. This year Ruth Dwyer, the conductor and Director of Education with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, will conduct the EFHC. The students will practice during the day on Thursday, February 8, and present a concert at the Performing Arts Center on the SDSU campus at 5:00 p.m.
