A mass of Christian burial for Alice Humpal was held on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Butte, NE with Father Starman officiating.

Music was provided by Pat Thiry and lector was Leota Reiser.

Pallbearers were Alice’s sons and grandsons.

Interment was in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery. Kotrba-Smith Funera Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Marie Baily, daughter of Esli and Nellie (Taylor) Bailey, was born October 19, 1929, in Spencer, NE. She was raised on the family farm north of Bonesteel, SD and graduated from Bonesteel High School in 1946. She attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD, where she met and started dating fellow student, Marvin Humpal.

After Alice received her teaching certificate, her first teaching job was in Delmont, SD.

Alice and Marvin were married August 18, 1948, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bonesteel, SD. They were blessed with six children: Kathleen, Mick, Cheryl, Randy, Lori and Scott.

Before Alice and Marvin moved to Butte, NE, in the summer of 1968, Alice taught in Armour, Sioux Falls, Bonesteel, Naper and Gregory. She taught first grade in Butte. In later years, she taught in several district schools where she taught all grades.

Throughout her life, Alice enjoyed sharing stories from her childhood with the grandkids, including attending elementary years in a one-room school and helping with the farm chores which included milking 20 or so cows.

After retirement, Alice and Marvin took part in a community volunteer group that designed and built the Butte Café. They also enjoyed traveling the world. They never missed their kids’ events and activities and particularly liked traveling to visit their family and attending their grandchildren’s activities and events. Alice and Marvin loved to dance together. Alice was a member of various educational and community groups.

Marvin and Alice moved to Windcrest Assisted Living in Lincoln, NE, in 2015 and enjoyed trips back to Butte to visit. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2018. Marvin passed away January 30, 2019, and Alice continued to live at Windcrest until she passed away on May 17, 2021.

She is survived by children: Kathleen (George) Dooley, Mick Humpal, Cheryl (Tim) Carmichael, Randy (Kim) Humpal, Lori (Jerry) Connot, and Scott Humpal; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Tom (Jean) Bailey, James V. Bailey and sister-in-law Shirley Bailey.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Esli and Nellie Bailey; parents-in-law, Charles and Sophia Humpal; siblings, Edgar Bailey and Irma (Ray) Schmitz; daughter-in-law, Gaby Humpal; and grandson, Tad Humpal.
