Committal services for Charles Johnson were held Thursday, December 29, 2022, with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery. Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis, SD, was in charge of arrangements. Charles Wayne Johnson, “Charlie”, was born in Lemmon, SD, in Perkins Co., on November 15, 1950, to Ralph Bennet Johnson and Dorothy Agnes (Salzsieder) Johnson. Charlie spent his younger years living on the family farm and attending the Runkel School. Later, the family moved to Mott, ND, where Charlie graduated from Mott High School in 1968. Charlie enlisted in the Army in 1968 (he was 17 at the time). Charlie served two tours in Vietnam, from 1969 - 1970 and 1970 – 1971. Charlie worked in the oil fields, on ranches or farms, and later was self-employed as an upholsterer. Charlie finally retired in the Meade County, SD area where he met Glenda Pastian.
In 2013, they purchased two quarter horse mares. In 2015, the mares presented two colts. Charlie really enjoyed spending time with the horses. Due to progressing health problems, the horses were sold around 2016. Charlie and Glenda traveled and enjoyed going south to explore different areas. He especially enjoyed touring national parks, museums, old prisons, and any historical sites. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. When they couldn’t do much traveling, they explored the local area.
