Graveside memorial services for Gerald D. Burkinshaw, age 87, of Lincoln, NE, formerly of Newport, NE area, were held April 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Spotted Tail Cemetery near Jamison, NE. Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson, NE, was in charge of arrangements.
Gerald was born at Herrick, SD, on August 9, 1933 to Ivan and Annabelle (Sherwood) Burkinshaw. He lived on the family ranch attending country school then high school in Springview, NE. He graduated May of 1951.
He married Alice Lubbers of Burke, SD, in 1952; to this union six children were born. They later divorced. He then married Judy Veldin of Lincoln, NE, and they had three children.
Gerald was employed as a ranch foreman for some years in Cherry, Keya Paha and Wheeler counties in Nebraska. He worked for some time for Nancy and Kenton Olson at Head Quarters Ranch near Bartlett, NE. Gerald was known for his horsemanship and his greatest love was for the few registered quarter horses that he owned. He would spend time breaking them and training them to work cattle on the ranch.
He moved to Lincoln after marrying Judy and worked at the University of Nebraska Cattle Experiment Station until finding work at a cab company for whom he worked for over 40 years and retired from there at age of 81. In the summer months he ran his own lawn service in the evening.
He passed away April 12, 2021 at Sunrise Country Manor in Milford, NE, after a lengthy illness.
Gerald is survived by five daughters and four sons; Dori Marx of O’Neill, NE; Karen and Tony Hoffman of Atkinson, NE; Kim Burkinshaw of Albuquerque, NM; Rob Burkinshaw of Yankton, SD; Richard Burkinshaw of O’Neill, NE; Danielle Schmidt and husband Kelly of Foreman, ND; Leslie and wife Theresia of Lincoln, NE; Brian Burkinshaw and Melinda Burkinshaw of Lincoln, NE; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Harold and wife Patsy of Newport, NE; sisters Evonne Heermann of Gregory, SD and Lou Ann Carr of Springview, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Delores, sons-in-law Mike Marx, Mark Reed and Jim Yelli; grandsons Derrick Miller and Marcellus Cherry.
