A memorial service for Guy Stanley Marts, age 94, formerly of Colome, South Dakota, was held at 2 p.m., August 22, 2026, at Prairie View Gospel Barn with Pastor Keith Moody officiating. Urn bearers were Scott Pike, Kally Wilson, Zack Hlavka, Amy Luse, Lou Zimbelman, Wyatt Meyer, Danielle Kalenda, Kore Cares, Avera Hospice, and Guy’s friends and family Lou Zimbelman was in charge of registrations. Interment will take place at a later date at the Rosebud Cemetery in Bonesteel, South Dakota. Military honors were conferred by the Gregory American Legion and the National Honors Team GuyStanleyMartswasbornonMay1,1932,inHarrison, Nebraska,to Dwight and Eva (Burkhart) Marts. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted to the US Army on February 3, 1955. Guy was stationed in Chaffee, Arkansas, and Fort Still, Oklahoma. While enlisted he was a truck mechanic and sighted in 155 howitzers and cannons. He helped on the gun range and was an MP transporting prisoners. Guy also boxed and was undefeated. He earned a Good Conduct Medal for Marksman (Carbine) and was honorably discharged on February 1, 1957.
Guy married Betty Ann “Annie” McIntyre on February 16, 1961. They lived on Annie’s grandparents’ farm, the Westly J Barr Homestead. Guy and Annie had a daughter on July 3, 1969, named Karen Ann. The couple raised horses, farmed, and ranched. They raced horses and greyhounds. Guy also participated in chariot racing. He was in the Days of ’76 parade until the 80’s. Guy and Annie were involved in the founding of the Heritage on Wheels Club in 1974. They later divorced.
Guy enjoyed riding and driving in parades. He participated in the Suicide Races in Ft. Pierre and all over, winning many and being recognized as the oldest. Guy loved to hunt, fish, and trail ride, and spent much time with his horses and dogs. In later years, he moved into an apartment and then lived with his daughter Karen and her husband Doug for a time before going to the nursing home.
Guy was a great story teller and an original cowboy, “by golly”. He passed away at the Winner Nursing Home on August 15, 2026, at the age of 94.
Guy is survived by his daughter Karen (Doug) Robertson; grandchildren Betty Ann Kerner, Winner, South Dakota, and Jace Robertson (fiancée Faith Covey), Pierre, South Dakota; greatgrandchildren Urijah Gonzalez and Aurora Gonzalez, and Case, Deacon, and Azalea Kerner; brothers Jerry (Annie) Marts and Tom (Robyn) Marts; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dwight and Eva Marts, and siblings Ralph Marts, Esther Marts, and Evelyn Kahler.
