John Rotter

Funeral services for John Patrick Rotter were held on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gregory, SD, with Father Jonathan Dillon, celebrant.

Music was provided by the St. Joseph choir, accompanied by Katie Opp, pianist. Doris Jelinek was cantor, Bev Rubel, lector and Ryle Stevicks and Sophia Stevicks, altar servers. Blair Sedlacek and Tammy Shanahan were in charge of registration.

Casket bearers were Dave Beck, Ken Beck, Nate Sedlacek, Roland Holub, Glenn Atteberry, Tom Shanahan, Bob Determan and Ray Bokker.

Interment was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military honors conferred by the Dallas American Legion and the Navy National Honors Team. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. John Patrick Rotter was born March 3, 1948, at the Burke Hospital to

John Patrick Rotter was born March 3, 1948, at the Burke Hospital to Herman and Pauline (Bruce) Rotter.

John graduated high school in 1966 and thereafter, joined the Navy in 1968. He served his country, and did so, by serving three tours in Vietnam. John was awarded numerous medals including: National Defense, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, RBN Gallantry Cross, Good Conduct Award and RVN Meritorious Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged in 1972.

After returning home, John married and was a father of three children: Brendan, Gunner, and Buffie. After four years of marriage, he returned home, to live, and work on the family farm. John loved hunting, fishing, firearm repair, but most of all, he loved God. Those that knew John, knew he would be in church every Sunday, and praying for those around him. John was also a proud grandpa to six grandchildren. Since being able to retire early, this allowed him to be with family, and his grandchildren more. He loved taking them out hunting, fishing, driving, and teaching them valuable life lessons.

He is survived by two brothers Kenny and Gerald Rotter, son Brendan Rotter (grandchildren: Tom, Henry, and Fiona), son Gunner Rotter (grandchildren: Taylor, Jacob, and Emma), and daughter Buffie Rotter.

John was preceded in death by his father Herman Rotter, his mother Pauline Rotter, and a brother Mike Rotter.
