Funeral services for Marvin Gies were held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory, SD, with Pastor Marcus Ring officiating.
Music was provided by Melaine Hannahs, organist and Darlene Horst was in charge of registration.
Casket bearers were Aaron Lien, Kariann Lien, Dustin Stukel, Emily Stukel, Lindsay (Jesse) Huser, Jordan (Cassie) Gies, and Lexy (Zach) Dickerson. Honorary casket bearers were the entire Gregory community that Marv was so fond of.
Burial with military honors conferred by e Herrick Legion and the National Honors Team was in the Herrick metery in Herrick, SD. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge arrangements.
Marvin Lee Gies was born April 28, 1936 to George and Margareate nittel) Gies along with his twin sister, Margaret (Gies) Baker at their rents home known as the railroad section house in Herrick, SD. The ins were the youngest of eight children.
Marvin attended school in Herrick and went on to graduate high hool in Burke, SD in 1955. Later in August that year, Marvin enlisted the United States Army for three years and spent 30 of those months Okinawa as a military police.
Marvin returned home to marry Carole Ann Jons on October 24, 58. To this union were born their children Laurie, Lisa and Dan. They moved to Sand Springs, OK, where they lived for four years and en moved back to South Dakota.
Marvin then went on to Southern State College in Springfield, SD ere he received his degree in body and fender repair. He then moved Gregory, SD to work for Iden Body Shop and later hired as a partme sub clerk at the Gregory Post Office. Since this was a part-time , Marvin built a body repair shop behind his home which became arv’s Body Shop. Marvin later became postmaster at the Gregory st Office and the last two years of his postal career he became Postaster at the Winner Post Office. Marvin then retired from the postal reer and then later became the Veteran Service Officer for Gregory unty. He always said that this was his most rewarding job helping terans getting their benefits and medical needs. Marvin spent several years driving the ROCS transit van that pro
Marvin spent several years driving the ROCS transit van that proded local transportation. He retired from that job at the age of 82. Marvin along with his wife Carole, spent a year working full-time lping build the St. John Lutheran Church. If you look around the urch there are a lot of things you can see that were made by him Marvin enjoyed taking his children on camping trips, vacations, hing and hunting. He also spent many years running the chains at e home football games with his good friend Clarence Ehnes, umpired any baseball and softball games, and was the girls softball coach ile his girls were growing up.
Marvin was an active member of his community where he and his fe Carole volunteered for many functions. Later in their married life Marvin became a full time caregiver to s wife Carole, who battles Alzheimers.
After a brief illness, Marvin passed away at the Avera Gregory Hosal on August 12, 2021. Marvin is survived by his wife Carole, twin sister Margaret (Glen)

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents George and Margare Gies, his brothers George, Walter, Arthur, Raymond and Melvin d a sister Fredrika and son-in-law Gregg Lien.
