Shirley Bailey

A mass of Christian burial for Shirley Clinton Bailey is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bonesteel, SD, with Father Jonathan Dillon officiating. Tony Koenig will be lector, and Christina and Sarah Spann will be servers. Music will be provided by the Immaculate Conception and St. Anthony’s Church choirs, accompanied by Roberta Witt, organist. Kathleen Dooley will be in charge of registration, and Dodi Bailey and Amanda Sibson, will be flower attendants. Casket bearers will be Scott Sibson, Laura Sudenga, Jason Bailey, Darcy VanderPol, Joel Bailey, Jordan Bailey, and Troy Bailey. Honorary casket bearers are Sean Sudenga, Sophia Sudenga, Julia Sibson, Jarsley Sibson, James Sibson, Jonah Bailey, Peyton Bailey, Libby Bailey, Hunter Bailey, Jorgan Remme, Dailey Remme, Jamison Vanderpol, Jeston Vanderpol, Parker Bailey, Jye Bailey, Summer Bailey, Novalee Bailey, and Lucas Bailey.

Interment is scheduled to be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bonesteel, SD. Clausen Funeral Home of Burke, SD, is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Joan Clinton, daughter of Hillery O. and Rose (Berens) Clinton, was born July 31, 1936, in Spencer, NE. She graduated from Spencer High School. On October 23, 1954, she was united in marriage to Edgar Bailey.

Shirley, the city girl, adapted quickly to ranch life while living on the Bailey family ranch north of Bonesteel, SD. She raised her children while milking cows for many years, tending a huge garden, and caring for her chickens. Shirley taught herself to sew, making many clothes for herself and others. She enjoyed polka music and Al Martino.

Throughout her life, she attended many sporting, activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley enjoyed an afternoon at Bernie’s pool hall in Herrick while having a cup of hot tea and visiting with the people there.

Shirley is survived by her children: Steve (Janet) Bailey, Susan (Mike) Sibson, and Tim Bailey; grandchildren: Jason (Dodi) Bailey, Darcy Bailey Vanderpol, Joel Bailey, Jordan Bailey, Scott (Amanda) Sibson, Laura Sudenga and Troy Bailey; eighteen great-grandchildren; sisterin- law Shirley Clinton; and brothers-in-law Tom and James V. Bailey.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Hillery O. and Rose; husband Edgar on December 17, 1998; parents-in-law Esli and Nellie Bailey; sons Philip and William; brothers Wayne (Hilda), Donavon (Mavis), Thomas (May), HO Junior, Roland, and Art; sister Vivian (Don) (Clinton Ross); in-laws Irma (Bailey) and Ray Schmitz, Alice (Bailey) and Marvin Humpa,l and Jean (Leibel) Bailey; grandson-in-law Mark Sudenga; and several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
