William Kucera

William “Bill” W. Kucera died at Foothills Hospital in Boulder, CO, on June 4, 2022, at the age of 87. Crist Mortuary & Cremation and Mountain View Memorial Park of Boulder, CO, were in charge of arrangements.

Bill was born July 11, 1934, in Gregory, SD, to Anna (Musilek) and Frank J. Kucera, Sr.

He graduated from Gregory High School in 1952. There he met his future wife, Myrna L. Sinclair. They were married on December 27, 1952, in Dixon, SD.

In the fall of 1952, Bill enrolled at the University of Colorado in Boulder. There, he received B.S. (1956) and M.A. (1960) degrees. While an undergraduate, he received multiple letters in football and wrestling, and later went on to be drafted by the professional football team Chicago Cardinals. He was recognized as a “Living Legend” by the University of Colorado Department of Athletics.

Bill was a caring and inspiring educator, guidance counselor, and athletic coach, primarily with the Boulder Valley School District at Boulder High School, Fairview High School, Louisville Junior-Senior High School, Centaurus High School, and the Boulder Vocational Technical School. He was a long-time member of the Boulder Valley Education Association, Colorado Education Association, and National Education Association. He retired in 1989 after 33 years of service in public education.

After family, work, and sporting events, Bill was passionate about spending countless days in the Colorado mountains with family and friends at his cabin in Nederland, CO. Bill enjoyed following and participating in sports. He was a lifelong fan of college and professional football, and played handball at a highlevel for many years.

He is survived by his wife Myrna of 69 years; three children: Ken (Wanda) Kucera, Kevin (Heather) Kucera, and Karen (Peter) Hanley; four grandchildren: Shannon Hanley, Katie Kucera, Sean Hanley, and Maggie Kucera.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Marvin, Dorothy, LaVerne, Joyce, and Frank Jr.
