On Saturday March 2nd, thirteen students from Gregory High School traveled to Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell to compete against other teams from the state in the first ever South Dakota Kid-Wind wind turbine design competition. The South Dakota KidWind Challenge, sponsored by the South Dakota Wind for Schools and the South Dakota Renewable Energy Association, is a hands-on wind turbine design competition that engages 6th - 12th grade students in STEM. Student teams brought small-scale wind turbines that they had designed to the challenge where they were tested in a wind tunnel. The team's turbines were connected to an electrical system that measured the power produced in a 30 second time span. The team with the highest power output would score the most points. Teams also meet with a panel of expert judges to present their design process and demonstrate their contextual knowledge of wind energy.

A new three-year opt-out was a topic of discussion at the regular meeting of the Gregory School District Board of Education’s regular meeting on Tuesday evening, March 12. The current opt-out of $160,000, which was an extension of an earlier three-year opt-out for the same amount, expires at the end of 2024.

Mayor Cerny took a moment to offer congratulations to the high school basketball team, as he opened the regular meeting of the Gregory City Council Monday evening, March 18, saying we can all be proud of them.

Ryan Cook was present at the Gregory County Planning Commission’s meeting on Tuesday, March 12, to appeal his building permit denial to erect a barn on 40 acres in an ag district. Commission member Sonny Plugge pointed out that nowhere in the county ordinances does it state that a house must be built on the parcel first.

Many people might remember the food pyramid. It was created by the USDA in 1992 to give a visual explanation of what was considered at the time to be a healthy diet. This common image that is likely remembered frequenting the back of a cereal box was the model of food consumption for a short 19 years. It was replaced in 2005 by a staircase- looking model, then replaced again in 2011 by USDA’s MyPlate, which you might recognize as a plate divided into sections for fruits, veggies, proteins and grains with a side circle of healthy fats.
