Lowell Genzlinger

Graveside services for Lowell Genzlinger, age 80, of Colorado and formerly of Burke, SD were held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Graceland Cemetery in Burke, SD. Clausen Funeral Home in Burke, SD, was in charge of arrangements. Lowell John Genzlinger was born on January 15, 1944, to Harry and Ruth Genzlinger. He was raised on a farm along with his older brother Vern, near Lucas, SD, and graduated from Burke High School in 1962. In 1966, he graduated from South Dakota State University with a civil engineering degree, and then joined the Coast and Geodetic Survey commissioned officer corps, which later became the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA). Lowell’s early assignments included shipboard duty conducting hydrographic surveys and oceanography in the Pacific and Alaska. It was the beginning of an extraordinary career.

Dewey Allum

Funeral services for Dewey Allum were held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at the Berean Church in Gregory, SD, with Pastor Andrew Chlebek officiating. Military honors were conferred by the Gregory American Legion and the National Honors Team. Inurnment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD, at a later date. Dewey James Allum was born on October 11, 1942, to Francis “Tanny” Allum, and Regina Demuth Allum along with his older brother William “Bill” Allum. Dewey was an adventurous kid and was involved with helping on the farm. He hunted and worked, but one of his biggest joys was playing football in high school.

Jean Kayl

Funeral services for Jean Kayl were held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gregory, SD, with Father Ron Garry celebrant. Music was provided by the St. Joseph Choir, accompanied by Mary Beth Gergen. Cantor was Anita Messerschmidt, and Margie Kainz was lector. Altar servers were Ian Opp and Sophia Stevicks, and gift bearers were Dan Kayl and Margie Kainz. Renee Stewart, Courtney Barber, and Siobhan Bromwich were in charge of registration, and flower attendants were Lindsey Kayl, Sarah Mc Coy, and Lori Cowins. Casket bearers were Charlie Kayl, Jacob Geigle, Tony Kayl, Josh Kayl, Wade Bromwich, and Andy Kainz. Honorary casket bearers were all Jean’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Richard Papousek were held on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Gregory, SD, with Pastor Royal Archer officiating.

Myrtle Osnes

Funeral services for Myrtle Osnes were held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Burke, SD, with Reverend Thaniel Certa-Werner officiating.

Kenneth Perrin

Kenneth B. Perrin was born to Clara Eisenhower and Clarence Perrin, on June 21, 1941, at his grandparent’s farmhouse south of Gregory, SD. He is the grandson of Gus and Lillie Sommerfeld, and nephew of Martin Sommerfeld.

Art Sattler

Arthur Lee Sattler, age 85, of Eastvale, CA, passed away on October 1, 2024. Art was born on January 20, 1939, in Gregory, SD, to Emil and Elsie (Cerv) Sattler. He attended St. Joseph Catholic grade school and graduated from Gregory High School in 1957 with fifty-eight classmates. He excelled in sports, particularly football, basketball, and track. His athletic talents earned him a football scholarship to South Dakota State University, where he played for the Jack Rabbits all four years. He was also active in track and field; He was a Two-time North Central Conference Champion for Javelin 1960 and 1961 and held the record at SDSU from 1960-1983. Art graduated with a degree in Engineering Physics and continued his education, earning a master’s degree in physics from University of California Los Angeles and a master’s in business management from Cal State Fullerton University. He began his professional career at Autonetics in Anaheim, California, after graduating in 1961.

David Heying

A celebration of life was held for David Heying at the Witten Hall on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. David was born October 30, 1949. He was the third of seven children born to Gerald (Jerry) and Ruth Heying. He was raised on the family farm near Hamill, SD, and attended school in Winner, SD, quitting school to do the farm work when his father became ill. At fifteen, Dave left home for the working life. He worked for many different people in and around Winner, doing a variety of jobs. At 17, Dave joined the service, choosing the National Guard. He was trained as a medic, a cook, and an engineer bridge builder. Dave served in active duty during the Chicago riots in 1969, and the Rapid City flood in 1972. He worked for Butler Aviation while in Chicago, IL.

Francis Ellston

A memorial service for Francis Ellston was held at 11:15 a.m., on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, SD. A private interment was held in the South Dakota State Veterans' Cemetery. George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory was in charge of arrangements. Dean “Peko” Ellston was born on August 2, 1936 in Rosebud, SD, to Arthur and Lyda (Helsing) Ellston. He attended grade school at McKenzie grade school near Dallas, SD, and high school in Dallas until the school burned down. Dean eventually received his GED while serving in the US Army.
