South Dakota has the distinction of being the first state in the Nation to provide for the popular Initiative and Referendum for enacting and rejecting legislation. This was accomplished by constitutional amendment which was approved in 1898. These forms of direct legislation, first used in 1908, rest on the theory that since the legislature may not always adequately represent them, the citizens should have the last word.

The 2019 World Bowfishing Champion team was in Gregory recently, preparing for the 2021 tournament, held in Brookings, SD. The Georgia team of Blake Fulbright, Chad Griffith, Ben Turner, and JJ Hayes (from Texas), was scouting the Missouri, putting about 300 miles on their truck every day, looking for fish in order to find the best location for this year’s tournament and defend their title. Because of COVID no tournament was held in 2020.

When Doug Knust started collecting material for a book, he didn’t realize he was writing a book. Knust, owner of the Gregory, Winner, and Mission NAPA stores, says that the idea to write the book wasn’t even his.

The regular meeting of the Gregory School District Board of Education was held at 5:30 p.m., Monday, June 14, 2021, at the high school. A few changes were made to the agenda.

Special education student graduation rates are falling short of state goals, according to new state data. On June 4, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported that the South Dakota Department of Education released annual information that shows the state graduation rate was 72.14%, well short of the 85% target.
