Members of the FFA Chapter and Mrs. Andrew’s Natural Resource class participated in Land and Range Judging in Wall, SD last Wednesday, September 27. Land judging consists of measuring soil and land properties in the field, interpreting them, and then making intelligent land management decisions based on the measured and interpreted properties. The ultimate objective in land judging is land classification. Contestants examined soil by looking at size, shape, color, and structure, then feeling texture and firmness. They also evaluated depth, slope, and stoniness; calculated past erosion; and interpreted its permeability and surface runoff. Based off of their judgments, members also had to fill out a homesite score card. Land Team Members were Leo Mosterd, Matthew Smith, and Jamison VanderPol. The team placed seventh overall. Leo was 19th, Jamison 23rd, and Matthew 48th.
