This week, the 2021 legislative session came to a close. In South Dakota, we keep things short; the session lasts a maximum of 40 legislative days. Every bill gets a hearing, its opportunity to be weighed and vetted by the 105 legislators that you elect to serve you in Pierre.

Sons of American Legion to hold meeting

The newly organized Sons of the American Legion will be holding a meeting on Wednesday, March 17, at 7:00 p.m. at the Legion Post in Gregory.

Lawmakers cap session with $5.1 billion budget approval

South Dakota lawmakers put a cap on the state budget Thursday, March 11, by boosting pay for teachers, state employees and community support providers, as well as sending millions of dollars to infrastructure projects and a college scholarship fund.

BID’s business survey provides helpful information

Last year, BID’s co-directors Rick Messerschmidt and Gregg Drees, along with Dr. Joe Hull and Dan Vavra, conducted a comprehensive survey of all the businesses in Gregory to get a feel for how these businesses perceive the current economic future of the city and what the city can do to assist in those plans.

Transgender sports bill is resurrected

Last week the ADVOCATE printed a story from the AP that the bill to promote continued fairness in women’s sports, HB 1217, had died in the Senate State Affairs committee. Based on legislative findings that “with respect to biological sex, one is either male or female” among other findings, the bill sought to block males from participating in female sports.

Background

Dwight Hammond and his son Steven Hammond of Burns, Oregon were pardoned by President Trump in 2018, and allowed to return home after serving more than half of their five year arson sentences for the approximately 140 acres of BLM land they burned in two separate occasions in 2001 and 2006.
