Herbicide carryover: caution when planting new windbreaks

The planting season will be upon us in another month or two so now is a good time to remind producers and planters to be aware of herbicide carryover. Every year we have a few new tree belts fail or do poorly because of high residue concentrations of herbicides in the soil. The most common herbicide carryover issues in South Dakota are with Atrazine (Atrazine) and Picloram (TordonR).

Noem joins lawsuit challenging social cost of climate change

South Dakota is joining a multistate lawsuit aimed at stopping federal regulators from making decisions that factor in the social cost that carbon and greenhouse gases have on the environment. The monetary figure factors into a wide variety of federal policy decisions, including Environmental Protection Agency regulations and government spending.

Governor Kristi Noem honors South Dakota foster parents

Governor Kristi Noem has proclaimed May as Foster Parent Appreciation Month in South Dakota to thank foster families for all they do for children in need. “Foster parents step up when children have nowhere else to go, offering a safe, nurturing, and stable home during a difficult and emotional time,” said Department of Social Services (DSS) Cabinet Secretary Laurie Gill.

Timanus named semifinalist in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Samantha Timanus, a graduating senior at Gregory High School, has been named one of 625 semifinalists in the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 6,500 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2021.
