Gregory Legion Post 6 4 - Platte/Geddes Post 115 2 Gregory County Legion fell just short of shutting out Platte-Geddes in the first round of the South Dakota American Legion State Class B Sr. Baseball Tournament on Friday, July 29.

As hot as it has been, it will still be hard for many of us to say good-bye to summer. Even though pumpkin spice (or maple walnut if that is your preference) and crisp, cool autumn days are still a ways off, the calendar says that the first day of school is just around the corner.

Rosebud Rancherette members, Sue Chytka (navigator), far left, and Betsy Senter (hauler), far right, delivered five donated beef cows to Wall Meat Processing for the Gregory and Burke schools. This beef will allow students to enjoy nutritious, locally grown beef in their school lunch programs for another year. Others pictured above are employees of Wall Meat Processing.

Some of you may be thinking, “Oh no, it’s already August!” One of the most common responses I have heard this season when asking someone how their summer is going tends to be how it is just going by too fast. Many of us yearn to enjoy the sun filled days of summer. Family get-togethers and social activities are abundant, and it is a time to enjoy activities that can’t be enjoyed other times of the year: golf, boating, fishing, and the like.

Forty-six members of the George and Ellen Nelson family gathered at West River Haven in Gregory, SD, on July 30 and 31 for a Nelson reunion. Those present were from the families of the Nelson brothers: Clarence, Floyd, Lester, Vernon (Bud), Glen and Duaine, and from the sisters: Ina Casey and Gladys Kubik. The attendees came from twelve states: AZ, CO, FL, IA, MN, ND, NE, PA, SD, TX, UT, and WI. An added bonus was listening to music provided by the “Small Town Girls”.

The “Small Town Girls” donated the money that the Nelson family reunion members gave them to provide music for the evening to the Gregory American Legion. Vicki Hubner, right, family reunion member, and Anita Messerschmidt, left, presented the check to Gregg Smith, center, commander of the Gregory American Legion. The donation will go towards the remodel of the legion club.
